Biochemistry (2)

Course Description: This course provides students with appropriate knowledge regarding brain energy pathways and neurotransmitters, and the importance of common biochemical tests used in the diagnosis and management of health conditions and diseases associated with metabolic disorders. It also addresses immune system responses and their impact on the metabolism of vitamins, minerals, glutathione, cholesterol, and lipoproteins. The course includes the study of the cell cycle and the importance of prostaglandins and leukotrienes in inflammation and rheumatic fever, in addition to the biochemical aspects of cancer and DNA damage and repair as the basis for genetic diseases.
Credit hours: 3
Objectives of the course :

1. Description of brain energy pathways, neurotransmitters, and the importance of common biochemical tests in the management of metabolism- and health-related diseases.
2. Understanding the immune system and its responses, and their impact on the metabolic pathways of vitamins, minerals, and glutathione.
3. Explanation of the cell cycle and the role of prostaglandins and leukotrienes in inflammation and rheumatic fever.
4. Identifying the biochemical characteristics of cancer and the mechanisms of DNA damage and repair as the basis for genetic diseases.

Course outputs :

• Understanding the pentose phosphate pathway (Hexose Monophosphate Shunt) and its relationship to brain energy and neurotransmitters.
• Explanation of the biochemical basis of diabetes mellitus, rheumatic fever, atherosclerosis, liver and kidney function tests, bilirubin and lipid metabolism, and acid-base balance.
• Identify immune system responses and inflammation, and their relationship with vitamin D, folic acid, vitamin B12, iron metabolism, and glutathione.
• Discussion of the biochemical characteristics of cancer, mechanisms of DNA damage and repair, and the biochemical basis of genetic diseases.
• Efficiently use various laboratory biochemical devices and tests.
• Demonstrate leadership, teamwork, and continuous self-learning skills.
