Fundamentals of Medical Genetics

Course Description: This course covers the fundamental principles of medical genetics and its applications in health and disease. It examines the structure and function of genes and chromosomes, gene expression mechanisms, mutations, and monogenic and multifactorial genetic disorders. The course also explores modern laboratory techniques used in diagnosing genetic diseases.

Prerequisites: MDL111
Objectives of the course :

Introduce students to the basics of medical genetics and the structure and function of genetic material.
Understand different patterns of inheritance and genetic and chromosomal disorders.
3. Development of skills in using laboratory and diagnostic technologies in the field of medical genetics and genetic counseling.

• Explains the structure and function of genes and chromosomes and their relationship to genetic diseases.
• Explains common genetic and chromosomal test results.
• Draws a pedigree chart and identifies patterns of inheritance for genetic traits and diseases.
