Patient Care and Safety

Course Description: This course introduces students to relevant theories, content, tools, and methods in patient safety and how they relate to patient safety issues in healthcare. Students will learn the fundamentals of incident investigation, gain an understanding of the advantages and limitations of error reporting, how to disclose errors and adverse events, and models for improving patient care and safety in hospitals and other participating healthcare organizations.

Prerequisites: HLTH222
Objectives of the course :

• Improve patient care and safety, and review institutional responses to adverse events.
Understand the modes of disease transmission and the principles of prevention.
Emphasizing effective communication and teamwork among healthcare team members.
Investigate incidents and occurrences and identify the most common patient safety problems.
• Preparing staff and patients to face the potential negative consequences of adverse events.
Ensure justification of radiation exposure and maintain patient protection within the Radiology Department.
• Evaluation of radiation incidents and development of effective tools for patient safety in radiology departments.

• Identify current legislation applicable to their professional practice.
• Statement of procedures followed to maintain a high level of care even in cases of personal incompatibility.
