Course Description: This course provides an introduction to financial markets and institutions that facilitate the flow of capital from savers to investors. Students will learn about the structure of the financial system, determinants of interest rates, and security valuation. The course covers the Federal Reserve System, monetary policy, and its impact on interest rates. Students will explore major financial markets including money markets, bond markets, mortgage markets, stock markets, foreign exchange markets, and derivative securities markets. The course also covers major financial institutions including commercial banks, their financial statements and analysis, insurance companies, investment companies, and investment banks. The course also discusses major financial crises, their repercussions, and their impact on financial regulation.

Objectives of the course :

Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:
Distinguish between the different types of financial markets and financial institutions.
Explain the determinants of interest rates and the factors influencing their movement.
Applying securities valuation methods.
Discuss the functions of the Federal Reserve and its role in ensuring financial system stability.
Identify the main characteristics of the money market, bond market, mortgage market, stock market, and derivatives market.
Study of the balance sheet activities of various financial institutions.
Identify the regulatory and supervisory requirements applicable to various financial institutions.
Identify the main risks faced by financial institutions and understand their risk management strategies, such as hedging, diversification, and securitization.
