Electrical Instruments and Measurements

Course Description: * **Introduction to Measurements:** Systems of units, scientific notation and metric prefixes, definition of measurement, measurement standards, elements of a measurement system, and applications of measurement systems. * **Types of Instruments and Performance Characteristics:** Types of measuring instruments, static characteristics, and dynamic characteristics of instruments. * **Errors in the Measurement Process:** Gross errors, sources of systematic errors and methods for their reduction, random errors, statistical analysis of measurements, and calibration. * **Measurement Noise and Signal Processing:** Signal-to-noise ratio, sources of measurement noise (inductive coupling and capacitive coupling), signal wire locations and design, shielding, signal filtering using passive low-pass filters (LPF), high-pass filters (HPF), band-pass filters (BPF), and active second-order first-order LPF and HPF filters. * **Fundamental Components of Measurement Systems:** Instrumentation amplifiers, differential amplifiers, buffer circuits, electrical bridges, analog-to-digital (A/D) converters, and digital-to-analog (D/A) converters. * **Design of Electrical Measuring Instruments, Test, and Display:** Digital meters, analog meters, capacitive sensors, resistive sensors, Hall effect sensors, and piezoelectric transducers.

Objectives of the course :

This course aims to provide electrical engineering students with the fundamental concepts and applications related to electrical instruments and measurements. The main objective of the course is to equip students with the following knowledge:

Recognizing the basics of measurement systems.
* Description of measuring instrument types and their performance characteristics.
* Explanation of safety requirements and correct use of laboratory measuring instruments.
Measurement of errors in measurements and methods for their reduction.
Analyze measurement noise and use appropriate techniques to reduce it.
* Design of a measurement system using operational amplifiers, electrical bridges, and digital-to-analog (DAC) and analog-to-digital (ADC) converters, considering a set of realistic constraints.
Identify the fundamentals of electrical measurement, display, and testing devices.
Preparing technical reports for lab and design projects, in addition to holding discussions within the team or individually.
Adapt to the use of various electrical equipment such as digital and analog meters and sources, as well as various software tools.
Commitment to discipline, such as attendance and timely submission of assignments.
