Maxillofacial Surgery and Rehabilitation

Course Description: This course is designed to familiarize students with the science of maxillofacial surgery and reconstruction. The course provides the student with the skills of diagnosis, treatment planning, knowledge of types of surgery and ways to control post-operative complications. This course will also orient the student to the types of prosthetic repairs for acquired and inherited maxillofacial defects resulting from injuries and accidents, as well as surgical procedures used to remove tumors. This course focuses on the prosthetic rehabilitation of patients who suffer from the loss of part of the face such as the eye, nose, and ear with or without intraoral defects.

Prerequisites: DENT 312
Objectives of the course :

By the end of this course, the student should be able to:
• Understanding what the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery team is.
• Achieve a simplified logical diagnosis.
• Selecting appropriate cases for treatment.
- Prioritize treatment and determine who is responsible for treatment.
- Counseling and advising patients on treatment options, recovery rates, and expected complications.

• Understanding acquired and inherited facial and jaw deformities and their types.
• Knowledge of different types of surgical interventions.
- Recognize the different types of prosthetic rehabilitation.
• Identifying the different types of materials used in surgical implants.
