Modern techniques in maxillofacial pathology

Course Description: This course is designed to teach and train students on various modern aspects of oral and maxillofacial pathology. It covers fundamental and advanced principles in pathology through lectures and lab courses based on traditional and experimental disease basics. The study is based on current theories in literature: nature and variations in health and disease. Analysis and interpretation of clinical, radiological, and microscopic data of oral lesions will be studied in depth. Specimens, report writing, and the role of computers in clinical pathology are strongly emphasized in this course.

Objectives of the course :

By the end of this course, the student should be able to:
• Identify diagnostic and consultative methods in head and neck pathology.
• Understanding of consultative services, including interpretation of radiological images, oral surgery, and oral medicine. Consultative services are provided through weekly seminars and presentations of oral lesion clinical cases.
• Apply infection control standards by meticulously treating oral pathogens during surgical procedures, and equipping the laboratory to avoid contamination from blood, viral infections, and hazardous materials.
• Identify types of samples, including needle aspirations and oral cytology smears, and diagnose them.
• Obtain tutorials that help with postgraduate research, Master's theses, and PhD dissertations.

Course outputs :

• Acquire knowledge about the following pathological techniques: Molecular Biology, Histochemistry, Immunohistochemistry, Electron Microscopy (Transmission and Scanning), Radioautography, Tissue Culture, Radioisotopes, Lasers, and Cultivation Technology.
• Access to the latest literature on all aspects of oral lesions.
• Perform pathological examination of a tissue specimen; conduct microscopic and comprehensive examination, including assessment of surgical margins for the presence of disease, and prepare and submit a written report.
• Learn the basics of microscopy and computer software for clinical data analysis.
