Course Description: Dental Informatics is the use of computers and scientific information to improve dental practice, research, education, and treatment. This field is considered new and has importance in supporting various areas of dentistry. This course has two main objectives: The first objective is to prepare students for the principles and common uses of computers. Knowing basic computer skills will help students use computer programs in basic sciences. These skills acquired during this course will be useful in other parts of the course. The second objective of Dental Informatics will focus on the use of computers in dental clinics, as well as in the early and final years of study. The course includes components and functions of treatment application software, oral health records, and digital imaging.

Objectives of the course :

By the end of this course, the student should be able to:
Understand the main components of computers.
• Operate the computer using technical tools and perform routine tasks associated with computer use, such as collecting, organizing, and processing information.
• Use social tools and email to communicate with colleagues.
• Use comprehensive planning software for creating diagrams and illustrations, acquiring skills in analysis and digital image creation.
• Understanding, describing, selecting, and using computer applications that assist in clinical dentistry, such as computer-aided diagnosis, treatment planning, clinical electronic devices, and information analysis tools.
Understand and apply computer-based oral health record concepts. .
• Describe the functions in the practice that could be supported by computer technologies and select and use the appropriate computer applications for performing these functions.
• Evaluate practice systems and the complete procurement budget process.

Course outputs :

• Utilize internet-based information resources to assist in clinical practice, continuous education, and communication with colleagues and other members of the healthcare team.
• Use practice management system information for quality assurance, cost analysis, and funding allocation in dental practice.
• Identify suitable areas for decision support and available research applications, and select and use them.
• Identifying and formulating research questions
• Familiarity with teaching skills such as seminars, lectures, and courses in informatics and IT in dentistry.
