The Art of Pharmacotherapy in Dentistry

Course Description: The purpose of this course is to review select pharmacological areas relevant to clinical dental practice. Key pharmacological concepts will be applied to therapeutic prescriptions. The course will enhance students' knowledge of commonly prescribed medications. Specific topics will include: mechanism of action, indications, dosages, drug interactions, and contraindications for dental patients. The course will provide current and up-to-date information on the selection of antibiotics, analgesics, and therapeutics, as well as common drugs and their effects in dental practice, pain and anxiety, and recent trends in pharmacological research.

Objectives of the course :

By the end of this course, the student should be able to:
• Discussion of pharmacological principles, drug mechanisms of action, and pharmacogenomics.
• Knowledge of the three methods of controlling aphthous ulcers, including prevention, pain relievers, and anti-disease drugs.
• Learn about products and remedies for patients suffering from dry mouth.
Identify a range of oral care products, whether ”alternative” or “natural,” for treating oral diseases.
Learn about the most common painkillers and their ability to be used preventatively to stop pain before it starts.
Learn drug compatibility, appropriate dosage for the right patient, and the correct method.
• Description of the potential for drug interactions between different drugs and clear strategies to avoid or manage them

Course outputs :

• Identify databases and references and how to utilize these tools to evaluate therapeutic drugs and their interactions.
• Description of the mechanism of action of the most common pain relief medications among patients and understanding why some drugs work and others do not after dental procedures.
Understand the principles of appropriate antibiotic prescribing.
• Learn about the latest research in pharmacology and forensic dentistry.
Description of drugs used for safe and effective anesthesia, whether oral or inhaled.
Understand the range of ingredients available in toothpaste, whether they are single-purpose or multi-purpose.
• Determine what type of mechanical or electric toothbrush design would be best for what type of patient.
