Imaging in Dentistry

Course description : The aim of this course is to introduce the main concepts of imaging in dentistry to students. Clinical imaging has great applications as a record-keeping system and as a means of conveying information. Slide projection of clinical material is a tool used for personalized assessment, patient education and good communication with colleagues. Documentation of patient treatment is a permanent record used not only by residents during their training but also by faculty at all levels of education. The use of imaging as a magic bullet to calm a frightened child, dental newsletters and publications will also be discussed.

Objectives of the course :

By the end of this course, the student should be able to:
Understand why digital photography and the advantages of digital over 35mm.
Knowing the digital camera systems suitable for use both inside and outside the mouth.
Use appropriate macro lenses for intraoral use.
• Describe multiple methods for taking intraoral and extraoral photographs, using mirrors and cheek retractors.
• Description of the uses of digital images in selecting and recording tooth shade.

Course outputs :

• Description of other uses of photography in dentistry, such as patient education, gifts for members, and record-keeping.
• Clarification of digital images of the facial contour and profile, analysis of full occlusion, and communication with patients.
- Take precautions when taking intraoral photos.
• Understanding terminology, creating and organizing files and programs for storing, retrieving, printing, and distributing digital images.
