Emergency medicine for dental students

Course Description: Life-threatening emergencies can occur anytime, anywhere, and to anyone. These situations can arise in a dental clinic due to the high level of stress that often occurs. This course will discuss the vital areas necessary for a good understanding of emergency medicine and will include an overview of the emergency kit (medications, equipment), basic life support (CPR), and airway management. It will also cover the identification and management of specific emergencies that may be encountered in a dental clinic, such as syncope, acute chest pain, seizures, shock, hypertensive crises, severe asthma attacks, hyperglycemia or hypoglycemia, and local anesthetic toxicity.

Objectives of the course :

By the end of this course, the student should be able to:
• Recognize basic life support and acquire CPR skills.
• Description of the management and differential diagnosis of acute chest pain.
• Discuss the process of airway management and the ability to perform necessary measures to open the airway.
- Recognize the types and how to deal with episodes of high blood pressure and loss of consciousness.
• Gain detailed knowledge of blood sugar highs and lows.

Course outputs :

• Understand the causes, clinical presentation, and management of local anesthetic toxicity.
• Knowledge of first aid for severe oral bleeding.
• Access to key knowledge for managing seizures, maxillo-facial injuries, and severe asthma.
