Neuroscience

Course Description: This comprehensive course is dedicated to understanding the main functions of the nervous system, the principles of sensory and motor functions, as well as understanding pain and how to manage it. Instructions include practicing local anesthesia and administering nitrous oxide. Lecture topics include pain transmission, neurotransmitters, pain perception theories, and methods for treating patients suffering from acute or chronic pain. Precautions for using drugs, hypnosis, and surgery to treat pain.

Prerequisites: DENT 113
Objectives of the course :

By the end of this course, the student should be able to:
• Description of the histological features of nerve trunks, nerve sheaths, myelinated and unmyelinated nerve fibers, and their identification under the microscope
• Description of the microscopic properties of sensory and motor nerve endings and clarification of the histological properties of different types of receptors
• Identify and describe the structure of the nervous system and its components
• Description and interpretation of the different functions of the nervous system components and special senses
Description of pathological deviations that can affect the functions of different parts of the nervous system and the consequences of these changes.
Pathophysiological interpretation of common neurological and sensory diseases
• Identify medications used to treat common neurological diseases.
• Reaching a logical order of specific neurological and sensory conditions
• Define clinical treatment plans for specific common neurological and sensory diseases
- Perform specialized neurological and sensory tests and examinations necessary to diagnose common diseases of the nervous system.
- Recognize the psychological, social and economic effects of some common neurological diseases in society

Course outputs :

- Describe the cranial nerves (XII-I) in terms of source, superficial connection, course, and distribution
Description of the sympathetic trunk's formation and the effects of its disruption
• Description of the formation of the cervical plexus and clarification of the nerves branching from it
Clarification of the connections and branches of the parotid lymph nodes of the head and neck
Knowledge of sensory pathways
- Recognizing the role of the cerebral cortex in sensation
• Understanding how to cope with pain
• Recognizing the psychological aspects of oral pain
• Description of local anesthetic drugs and methods
• Awareness of the complications of local anesthesia
