Genetics, Growth and Development

Course Description: The purpose of this course is to provide the student with the fundamental concepts of growth, development, maturation, and aging of the tissues and systems in the craniofacial complex, and deviations and variations from normal growth and development, to prepare the student for the subsequent preclinical and clinical stage.
Credits: 6
Objectives of the course :

By the end of this course, the student should be able to:
• Origin of tissues associated with facial and dental growth and development
• Growth and development factors, from cell to cell, and to the template signal for growth and development
• Growth and development of cartilage and bones
• Distinctive features and function of bone cells
• Description of the main growth sites and types of bone growth in the cranial base, craniofacial complex, and mandible, and how differential growth of craniofacial components contributes to changes in the size, shape, and proportions of craniofacial components.

• Stages of tooth development
