Epidemiology and diseases of malnutrition

Course Description: This course explores the role of epidemiology in understanding malnutrition and associated diseases. It covers study methods in nutritional epidemiology, examining the epidemics of vitamin A, iodine, and iron deficiencies, protein-energy malnutrition, and nutrition-related non-communicable diseases, with a focus on their public health impact.
Credit hours: 3
Prerequisites: CNUT322
Objectives of the course :

To provide students with a comprehensive understanding of how epidemiology impacts the study of malnutrition, focusing on the distribution of malnutrition-related diseases, their determinants, and their impact at the population level.

Course outputs :

1. Description of general healthy eating problems in light of epidemiology, and the causes and consequences of malnutrition.
2. Describe the study designs in nutritional epidemiology.
3. Applying the principles of nutritional epidemiology to analyze the prevalence, causes, and impact of malnutrition and diet-related diseases.
Critically evaluate nutritional epidemiology and use evidence-based public health nutrition practices to inform the community.
