Emergency medicine

Course Description: This course covers emergency medicine and is built around general behavioral objectives similar to those of internal medicine and surgery courses, as well as specific objectives addressing problems across all specialties. It integrates basic sciences with clinical sciences and the skills required for diagnosis and treatment. The content addresses cases of syncope, general shock, cerebral shock, hemorrhage, convulsions, epilepsy, chest pain, acute abdominal pain, renal colic, septicemia, pneumothorax, laryngeal edema, food poisoning, intestinal obstruction, bronchospasm, asthma, and snake and insect bites. These vary in importance for the general practitioner in terms of their theoretical and practical content, but among the physician's most pressing duties is to perform initial life-saving procedures and relieve severe pain.

Objectives of the course :

Display responsible and compassionate behavior with the patient and family, taking into account cultural, social, and economic backgrounds, and when interacting with all educational levels and abilities.
Mastering the communication skills required to take a medical history and conduct an appropriate physical examination.
3. Evaluate the role of basic sciences (anatomy, physiology, and biochemistry) and relevant basic pathophysiological processes in the diagnosis and management of common diseases in the patient and community.
4. Recognize the epidemic profile of the population and community, their heritage, and their cultural, social, geographic, and economic characteristics, and the relationship between all of these and the causes and treatment of medical diseases.
5. Possess the necessary knowledge and skills to identify and treat patients' health problems in emergency situations.
6. Appropriate selection of the most suitable and cost-effective tests to reach the correct diagnosis, taking into account patient rights, capabilities, and the health system's capabilities.
7. Interact effectively with the health team (and appreciate the role of others) in providing medical services.
8. Continue independent learning and pursue graduate studies.

1. Recognition of different types of emergencies, description of their mechanisms, clinical manifestations, and management methods, with a focus on common emergencies in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
2. Description of principles for managing life- and/or limb-threatening conditions.
3. Safely conduct a physical examination to identify signs requiring immediate intervention.
4. Safely use appropriate diagnostic and intervention procedures in emergency situations.
5. Integrate data from patient interviews with medical knowledge to develop an evidence-based management plan for emergency medical conditions, including appropriate examinations, treatment pathways, and preventive measures.
6. Demonstrate the ability to work effectively both independently and as part of an emergency medical care team, and to exercise leadership when appropriate.
7. Demonstrate the ability to apply critical thinking and creativity in dealing with emerging emergencies.
