General surgery

Course Description: This course includes the general surgery curriculum. The curriculum is built around general and specific behavioral objectives, integrating basic sciences with clinical sciences and the skills required for diagnosis and treatment. The content covers emergencies and routine cases in each specialty. It reviews the objectives that the student must achieve, which vary in importance for the general practitioner, and the variation is indicated by the priority level specified in parentheses at the end of each objective. The contents are divided into general surgery fundamentals, head injuries, injuries and tumors of different body areas: head and neck, chest, breast, abdomen, inguinoscrotal region, and urinary tract, in addition to pediatric surgery.

Objectives of the course :

Display responsible and compassionate behavior with the patient and family, taking into account cultural, social, and economic backgrounds, and when interacting with all educational levels and abilities.
Use the required communication skills to take an appropriate medical history and perform a physical examination.
3. Appraise the role of basic sciences (anatomy, physiology, and biochemistry) and relevant underlying pathophysiological processes in the surgical practice, diagnosis, and treatment of common diseases in patients and the community.
4. Identifying the epidemiological profile of the population and the community, their heritage, and their cultural, social, geographical, and economic characteristics, and the relationship of all of that to the causes and treatment of surgical diseases.
5. Possess the necessary knowledge and skills to identify the patient's health problems: common emergencies, endemic or epidemic diseases, and disabilities, including health promotion and prevention, treatment, rehabilitation, and follow-up.
6. Optimal selection of the most appropriate and cost-effective tests to reach the correct diagnosis, taking into account patient rights, capabilities, and the healthcare system's capabilities, especially when balancing the pros and cons of surgical intervention.
7. Interact effectively with surgical and other healthcare teams (and appreciate the roles of others) in the provision of medical and surgical services.
8. Continue independent learning in surgery and pursue postgraduate studies.
