Medical ethics

Course Description: There is a close relationship between Islamic law (Sharia) and professional ethics. A physician practices medicine after taking an oath in which they commit to fearing God in their profession. They seek God's judgment in their practices and dealings, remaining a means of mercy. They care for those near and far, friend and foe, the doer of good and the wrongdoer, the rich and the poor equally, regardless of race, religion, or ideology. They protect human life in all its stages, exerting efforts to save it from destruction, illness, pain, and anxiety under all circumstances. They strive for mastery of their work and the advancement of knowledge, harnessing them for the benefit of humanity, without harming or disgracing them. They do not bear false witness, nor do they reveal secrets. They do not kill a soul, nor do they prescribe poison. They must respect those who taught them and instruct those who are junior to them. They must be a brother to all members of the healthcare team, and their conduct must be a reflection of their faith. Forgetting, ignorance, or disregard may lead to a violation of these principles, making the physician liable for religious accountability. Therefore, it is incumbent upon them to be knowledgeable of the rules of professional conduct, especially those related to their creed and worship. The physician must also comprehend the medical history of their nation and its ethical achievements, drawing upon them for inspiration and as a foundation for their practices, measuring them against their creed and Sharia, so that the nation may once again become a leader and pioneer in science and ethics.
