Nervous system

Course Description: The course covers the nervous system, senses, and behavior, including their disorders. It includes general and specific objectives, integrating basic sciences with clinical sciences and required skills. The objectives aim to introduce students to the anatomy of the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord) and peripheral nervous system (cranial and peripheral nerves and their plexuses), and the autonomic nervous system (sympathetic and parasympathetic). It also covers their histology, development, functions, congenital defects, diseases, injuries, and tumors. Additionally, it covers the eye and orbit, the ear and temporal bone, their development, functions, and diseases, as well as how to medically examine these organs and disorders, their diagnosis, treatment, and prevention.

Objectives of the course :

1. Identification of the members of the nervous system and its components.
2. Knowing the different functions of the components of the nervous system and the special senses.
3. Identifying pathological deviations that may affect the functions of the nervous system components and the consequences of these changes.
4. Explain the underlying pathophysiology of common neurological disorders and special sensory disorders.
5. Identification of neurotransmitter and neuropeptide synthesis and degradation.
6. Identification of medications used to treat common neurological and psychiatric disorders.
7. Be familiar with basic neurological examinations and special senses required for diagnosing common nervous system disorders, including cerebrospinal fluid analysis.
8. Identifying the psychological, social, and economic impacts of some common neurological disorders in society.

Course outputs :
  • Description of the development of the nervous system, its normal structure and function, as well as special senses, and normal human behavior, in a comprehensive and logical manner.
  • Learn about the various types of human diseases that affect the nervous system, the sensory organs, and behavior; and describe their pathogenesis and clinical manifestations.
  • Describe the principles of managing various human diseases affecting the nervous system, the sensory organs, and behavior, with a focus on common conditions, using a community-based approach.
  • Critically evaluate and integrate medical knowledge of the nervous system, sensory organs, and behavior from reliable sources to make evidence-based decisions in selected clinical scenarios.
  • Identify your educational needs and demonstrate responsibility for self-directed learning.
