Blood and the immune system

Course Description: The course covers the blood system, its problems, and includes general and specific objectives. It integrates basic sciences with clinical sciences and required skills. The objectives aim to introduce the student to the components of blood, review blood vessels and their histological characteristics, the development of blood cells from their sources, their functions, and congenital, inherited, or acquired defects such as exposure to injuries, infections, and carcinogens. It also covers how to examine blood to diagnose and manage disorders of the blood system and others, and how to prevent them in individuals and society. The course includes the immune system, its components, the functions of each, and the role of immune cells in fighting foreign bodies. It addresses malfunctions that lead to mistaken targets, where the immune system attacks the body itself, or when it fails to defend the body, as in cases of cancer or AIDS, and other problems. It also covers medical examination for diagnosis and treatment, and prevention in individuals and society.

Objectives of the course :

Acquire basic knowledge about the structure and function of body organs related to blood formation and lymphocyte formation.
2. Gaining basic knowledge of pathological conditions related to both the blood and immune systems.
3. Gaining knowledge about iron metabolism, its disorders, heme structure and synthesis; and basic knowledge of hemolytic anemia.
4. Gaining knowledge of the medications used to treat the main problems associated with these two systems.
5. Identify community aspects related to these problems and solve problems of great societal importance.

Course outputs :

1. Describe the development, normal structure, and function of the hematopoietic and immune systems comprehensively and interconnectedly, considering behavioral and social aspects.
2. Identify the different types of human diseases affecting the hematopoietic and immune systems, and describe their pathogenesis and clinical manifestations.
3. Describe the management (treatment) principles for various types of human diseases affecting the hematologic and immune systems, focusing on life-threatening and common conditions, in a community-oriented approach.
4. Safely perform a general and specific examination of the hematologic and immune systems.
5. Safely utilize appropriate diagnostic procedures related to the hematologic and immunologic systems in a simulation center.
Integrating medical knowledge for a deeper understanding to reach evidence-based decisions regarding the health of individuals and the community for medical conditions related to the blood and immune system.
Demonstrate the ability to work effectively within a team in an educational setting and practice leadership when appropriate.
8. Identify their special educational needs and demonstrate responsibility for guided self-learning.
