Course Description: This course focuses on measures taken to prevent illness and injury rather than treating or alleviating their symptoms. This approach differs from curative and palliative medicine, and in its scope, differs from public health methods. This course will provide students with an overview of the fundamental principles and practices of preventive medicine and public health, with the aim of enhancing their knowledge and skills in selected areas of clinical preventive medicine common in primary healthcare practice.

Objectives of the course :

1. Identify health status indicators and disease-causing factors.
2. Mention the factors that determine the spatial, temporal, and social distribution of infectious diseases.
3. Describe how transmissibility is measured.
4. Design, implement, and interpret investigations of disease outbreaks and their control.
5. Describe primary prevention methods – health promotion.
6. Identify primary prevention methods – Specific protection.
7. Describe secondary prevention methods.
8. Identify tertiary prevention methods.
9. Identifying prevention methods for COVID-19.
10. Mention common research designs used in epidemiology.
