Molecular biology

Course Description: This course aims to study the fundamental principles of molecular biology by examining the molecular structure of the cell, the structure and functions of nucleic acids, and gene encoding mechanisms. The course also covers protein structure and function, DNA replication and transcription processes, and gene expression and its regulation. Furthermore, the course delves into essential molecular biology techniques such as protein and nucleic acid electrophoresis, restriction enzymes, vectors, gene cloning, gene banks, and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technology, with a focus on linking theoretical concepts to scientific applications in biological fields.
Credits: 2
Prerequisites: 322 BIO
Objectives of the course :

The course aims to enable students to:

Definition of genome structure and function, and explanation of gene structure and function in animal cells.
Explanation of the importance of molecular biology techniques and their role in various scientific fields.
Analysis of genetic material transmission mechanisms across generations.
Interpretation of gene expression processes and their regulatory mechanisms.
Employing molecular technologies to solve biological problems and contemporary applications.
Identifying genetic diseases in humans, explaining their causes, and methods of prevention.

Course outputs :

By the end of the course, the student will be able to:

To define the structure and function of the genome, and to explain the structure and functions of genes in animal cells.
To explain the mechanisms of DNA replication and transcription, and to illustrate the processes of gene expression and regulation.

Second: Skills

By the end of the course, the student will be able to:
To analyze molecular biology data and techniques, and connect them to their biological applications.
To compare patterns of genetic material transmission and deduce their implications across generations.
To interpret the results of molecular experiments (such as PCR and gel electrophoresis) and draw scientific conclusions from them.
To apply molecular concepts to explain biological phenomena related to gene expression.
To evaluate the use of molecular techniques in addressing specific biological problems according to scientific criteria.

Third: Values, Autonomy & Responsibility

By the end of the course, the student will be able to:

To adhere to the ethics of scientific research and demonstrate responsibility in handling genetic issues and making appropriate scientific decisions.

Additional information:

This course contributes to preparing students for the job market by providing them with fundamental knowledge in molecular biology and related modern technologies. This qualifies them to work in research and medical laboratories, biotechnology companies, pharmaceutical industries, and genetic analysis centers. The course also develops skills in molecular data analysis, the use of modern techniques like PCR and gene cloning, searching scientific databases, and effective scientific communication. This enhances graduates' ability to keep pace with scientific and technological advancements and compete in life science fields.
