Ecosystem and pollution

Course description : The course covers the following topics: Study the basics of ecosystems in terms of definition, components, types, energy flow, sources, and movement within the ecosystem. It also includes the study of food chains, food webs, and ecological pyramids. It also covers the biogeochemical cycles of nutrients such as water, oxygen, carbon, and phosphorus cycles, as well as nitrogen and sulfur cycles. The course also focuses on environmental imbalances and changes and their importance, as well as studying some environmental issues and proposing appropriate solutions to them. The course also covers the diversity in biological communities and types of environments such as drylands, deserts, forests, grasslands, savannas, tundra, in addition to aquatic environments (fresh, saline and semi-saline) with examples from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. It also deals with the study of plant communities and plant succession (aquatic and dry), and the characteristics of these communities in terms of quantity, quality, and composition. It also focuses on the concept of biodiversity, its importance, the factors that threaten it, and the role of modern technologies in preserving it. Finally, it addresses environmental pollution and its types (air, water, soil, auditory, visual, and food pollution) as well as the global warming phenomenon, its definition, and its connection to greenhouse gases.
