Immunology and serology

Course Description: This course covers the scientific foundations of immunology, including the structure and functions of the immune system and its cellular and molecular components, such as immune cells (B and T cells) and the lymphatic system. It also focuses on types of immunity (innate and acquired) and the mechanisms of immune response, in addition to studying antigens and antibodies. The course covers advanced topics such as immune tolerance, autoimmune diseases, the relationship between the immune system and tumors, organ transplantation and rejection, immunodeficiency diseases like AIDS, allergies, and factors affecting immune system efficiency. It also addresses practical applications of immunology, including sera and vaccines, their preparation methods, and their mechanisms of action in disease prevention.
Credit hours: 3
Prerequisites: BIO 470
Objectives of the course :

Provide students with basic knowledge about the structure and functions of the immune system and the types of immunity.
Developing students' ability to understand the mechanisms of immune response and the roles of immune cells and molecules.
Enhancing analytical and comparative skills between immune responses in normal and pathological conditions.
Equip students with the ability to interpret autoimmune diseases and immunodeficiency.
Introducing students to modern techniques used in the diagnosis of immune diseases and the separation of antibodies.
Developing skills in using scientific terminology, report writing, and teamwork.

Course outputs :

First: Knowledge and understanding
By the end of the course, the student will be able to:
Defines the components of the immune system and types of immunity (innate and adaptive).
Explains the structure and functions of immune cells and molecules and their role in the immune response.

II: Skills
By the end of the course, the student will be able to:
Analyzes the differences between innate and acquired immunity in terms of structure and function, and their roles in normal conditions and autoimmune diseases.
Explains the role of immune cells (B and T) in regulating the immune response.
Evaluates mechanisms of autoimmune diseases and immunodeficiency and their effects on the body.
Applies laboratory techniques in separating immune bodies and diagnosing diseases.
It uses modern technologies to analyze and diagnose immunological conditions.

Third: Values, Independence, and Responsibility
By the end of the course, the student will be able to:
Evaluates normal and pathological immune conditions by preparing scientific reports and working effectively within a team, adhering to professional ethics.

Additional information:

This course is one of the core courses that qualify biology graduates to work in multiple vital fields such as medical laboratories, blood banks, research centers, and pharmaceutical and vaccine companies. Knowledge of the immune system and immune response mechanisms enables the student to understand diagnostic methods for immune and infectious diseases and to use modern techniques such as serology in disease detection. Furthermore, analytical, interpretive, and practical application skills enhance employment opportunities in hospitals, diagnostic laboratories, and public health organizations, in addition to participating in the development of vaccines and immunotherapy. This aligns with the needs of the labor market in the health and technology sectors.
