General plant physiology

Course Description: Theoretical: - The plant cell / Solutions (types, role of each solution in cell function) / Water relations (osmotic pressure, water potential, water relations equations and their application) / Soil and plant nutrition (macro and micronutrients - physiological role of each element - deficiency symptoms - treatment methods) / Phloem transport (movement of nutrients within conducting tissues) / Photosynthesis and its influencing factors / Respiration (aerobic and anaerobic respiration - influencing factors) / Plant hormones (auxins, gibberellins, cytokinins, inhibitors, and their role in agriculture) / Enzymes - definition - physiological role - mechanism of action - enzyme inhibitors / Nitrogen transformations (symbiotic and non-symbiotic nitrogen fixation) / Environmental physiology (types of environmental stress - environmental pollution - treatment methods). Practical: - Preparation of various solutions and their precipitation / Microscopic study of the plant cell / Study of osmosis and diffusion experiments / Demonstration of photosynthesis in green plants / Demonstration of aerobic and anaerobic respiration in plants / Extraction and determination of photosynthetic pigments / Experiments on enzyme activity.
Credit hours: 3
Prerequisites: BOT 101
Objectives of the course :

Defining plant physiology for students and its importance in other applied sciences.

The students will learn about the physiological processes that plants go through during their life.

Provide students with knowledge related to construction and demolition processes, the role of enzymes and plant hormones, and environmental pollution.

Course outputs :

By the end of the student's study of the course, they will be able to:

List the most important factors affecting the growth of vegetable crops in Saudi Arabia.

· Explain how physiological experiments are conducted to estimate optimal conditions for specific crop production. .
