Biochemistry (1)

Course Description: This course helps students explore the molecular structure of cell components and their functions related to biological processes in the human body, including the chemistry of carbohydrates, amino acids, proteins, fats, and various metabolic processes. It also enables students to identify enzymes, hormones, receptors, and vitamins, and addresses the molecular basis of nucleic acids, genetic information, and protein synthesis. Additionally, it reviews the principles of heredity and genetic diseases, heme metabolism, and the biochemical components of muscle fibers and their relationship to human functional performance.
Credit hours: 3
Objectives of the course :

1. Identify the fundamental concepts and theories related to the chemistry and functions of various biological cellular structures, including carbohydrates, their metabolic pathways, and vitamins.
2. Description of the fundamentals of cellular biological fluids and the extracellular matrix and their relationship to molecular biology and genetics.
3. Description of the basics of heme metabolism, the components of muscle fibers, and their biochemical effects on human strength and performance.
4. Demonstrating scientific presentation skills, professional leadership, and teamwork in the field of biochemistry.

Course outputs :
  • Explanation of the chemistry and metabolism of carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins, and minerals, stating their dietary sources, biological importance, and deficiency symptoms.
    • Explanation of the components of cellular biological fluids, enzymes and coenzymes, hormones, biological regulators, extracellular matrix, heme metabolism, and biochemical components of muscle fibers.
    • Describe the basic principles of nucleic acids and heredity and their role in human growth and development.
    • Clarification of the basic principles of biochemical and molecular biology laboratory applications, including laboratory safety, data documentation, and scientific research ethics.
    • Efficiently utilize various laboratory equipment and basic biochemical tests used in biochemistry laboratories.
    • Demonstrate professional leadership, teamwork, and continuous self-learning skills.
