Course Description: Introduction to dictionaries and their functions, and their types - Dictionaries in ancient and modern times, the concept of semantics, its fields, issues, origins, development, and theories.
Credit hours: 3
Prerequisites: ARAB130
Objectives of the course :

Recognizing the scientific value of semantics and lexicology, general trends in them and lexicography, and the extent of Arab contributions in these two fields.

Course outputs :

knowledge:

  • The student should remember the concept of semantics and lexicology, its topics, basic methodologies, and its development.
  • The student will learn the curriculum of semantics and lexicology and its objectives in understanding meaning in languages.
  • To describe the images of semantic change.
  • To summarize the most important characteristics of modern linguistic theories and the ways in which they differ methodologically and epistemologically in the study of meaning in human languages.
  • That the student observes topics of semantics and lexicography through texts.
  • The student should learn about new psychological, educational, and scientific research concerning the study of meaning in human language and how to benefit from it in the study of the Arabic language. .

  • The student should interact with dictionaries of words of all types.
  • The student infers the widening, narrowing, or shifting in the meaning of words.
