Course Description: This course defines feed sources and components and their nutritional constituents (protein, energy, fiber, minerals, and vitamins), methods for evaluating the nutritional value of feeds, principles of formulating balanced rations for different animals (cattle, sheep, poultry, pigs, horses), feed processing and storage methods, and economic and environmental considerations related to animal nutrition.

To provide students with scientific knowledge of feed components and their nutritional value.
Enable the student to evaluate and analyze commercial and natural feeds using simple methods and nutritional concepts.
Equip the student with skills for formulating balanced relationships according to the needs of different production types and stages.

The main components of animal feed and their function in animal nutrition are: * **Carbohydrates:** Provide energy for growth, maintenance, and bodily functions. They are the primary source of calories in most animal diets. Examples include grains (corn, wheat, barley) and forages (grass, hay). * **Proteins:** Essential for building and repairing tissues, producing enzymes and hormones, and supporting the immune system. They are made up of amino acids, some of which are essential and must be supplied in the diet. Examples include soybean meal, fish meal, and meat and bone meal. * **Fats and Oils:** A concentrated source of energy, essential fatty acids, and fat-soluble vitamins. They also improve palatability and can aid in the absorption of certain nutrients. Examples include vegetable oils, animal fats, and rendered fats. * **Vitamins:** Organic compounds required in small amounts for various metabolic processes, enzyme functions, and overall health.
