Upon successful completion of the course, the student should be able to:
• Differentiating between concepts: defining and distinguishing use, misuse, and substance dependence, and identifying the most common psychoactive substances in Saudi Arabia.
• Understanding the Origins of Addiction: Explaining the biological, psychological, and social origins that cause substance addiction.
• Problem Analysis and Contributing Factors: Explanation of the causes of abuse, identification of local, regional, and international influences, and discussion of risk and protective factors.
Field Research: Identify the essential components of a questionnaire designed to measure the prevalence of substance abuse in community samples.
Scientific Diagnosis: Acquiring sufficient background on drug dependence and its clinical and analytical diagnostic methods, and knowing the criteria of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM).
• Managing Complications: Identifying and managing medical complications resulting from drug dependence, including overdose cases.
• Detoxification: Acquire skills in detoxification procedures through internationally and ethically approved techniques.
• Legal and ethical awareness: Understanding the importance of legal and ethical issues related to patient counseling and therapy.
Knowledge and understanding:
1.1 Critical evaluation of the neurobiological mechanisms of addiction and the pharmacological properties of psychoactive substances. .
1.2 Organizing epidemiological trends and legal and legislative frameworks for narcotic substances locally and internationally. .
Skills:
2.1 Integrate clinical, behavioral, and analytical data to formulate comprehensive treatment and management plans for addiction disorders. .
2.2 Critical evaluation of the accuracy and validity of screening tools and laboratory biomarkers in detecting substance abuse. .

3.1 Applying ethical principles, respecting patient autonomy, and bearing social responsibility when dealing with addiction cases.
3.2 Leading interdisciplinary therapeutic interventions and effectively communicating addiction prevention strategies to the community and stakeholders. .
