Radiopharmaceuticals

Course Description: This course covers atomic and nuclear structure, and the causes of radioactivity. It also includes radioactivity detectors, production of radionuclides, preparation and quality control of radiopharmaceuticals, along with their specific applications for therapeutic and diagnostic purposes. The course also presents the radiation hazards associated with radiation exposure and how to prevent them.
Credits: 2
Prerequisites: 241 PHC
Objectives of the course :

• Understanding radioactive materials used in diagnosis and treatment, their operating principles, preparation, pharmaceutical formulation, uses, necessary precautions for handling them, and detection methods.
• Identify on-site (in-facility) preparation techniques for specific radiopharmaceuticals, their purification methods, quality control, practical knowledge, and administration methods to patients, in addition to methods for detecting various pharmaceutical conditions using appropriate radioactivity detectors.
• Provide students with various therapeutic and diagnostic applications of radiopharmaceuticals and recommended formulations. Address the biological risks resulting from exposure to radioactivity and their prevention measures.

Course outputs :

• Description of various techniques for the production and characterization of different radionuclides and radiopharmaceuticals.
• Description of radiation and the types of particles emitted from radioactive nuclei.
• Identify the risks associated with radiation exposure and recommend necessary preventive measures.
• Differentiate between types of radiation detectors and counters, and evaluate their suitability for use.
Calculate the half-life of a radioactive nucleus and decode the data on radiopharmaceuticals.
