Toxicology

Course Description: This course deals with the fundamental principles of toxicology and its various branches, the mechanisms of toxicity, and methods for managing common toxicological cases. It also addresses the serious consequences resulting from exposure to drugs and chemicals. Additionally, the course focuses on the basic principles related to addictive substances and their management.
Credit hours: 3
Prerequisites: 241 PHG
Objectives of the course :

This course aims to introduce students to:
General Principles of Toxicology.
• Target organ toxicity.
Environmental Toxicology.
• General principles of addictive substances.
Pharmacology of addictive substances.
• Management and administration of various types of addictive substances.

Course outputs :

1.0 Knowledge and Understanding:
1.1 Mention of general procedures followed in managing poisoning and substance abuse cases.
1.2 Definition of the general mechanisms of common toxins affecting the heart, liver, kidneys, lungs, and brain.
1.3 Presentation of the toxicity of environmental pollutants, common heavy metals, and caustic substance poisoning cases.
1.4 Definition of different medical terms in the field of addictive substances, such as: addiction, tolerance, dependence, and withdrawal syndrome.
1.5 Discussion of dependence resulting from alcohol, cocaine, khat, amphetamines, opiates, cannabis, benzodiazepines/barbiturates, and hallucinogens.

2.1 Explain the biochemical and cellular mechanisms underlying common drug and chemical toxicities.
