Plant anatomy

Course Description: This course covers the study of plant cell structure and its living and non-living components, focusing on the cell wall, its structure, function, and types of pits. The course also covers different plant tissues, including meristematic tissues and permanent tissues (ground, vascular, and secretory tissues), in addition to epidermal structure, stoma types, and trichomes. The course focuses on the study of the internal anatomy of plant organs (root, stem, leaves) in both monocots and dicots, including secondary thickening, as well as the analysis of vascular bundles and periderm tissues. The course also addresses the effect of environmental factors on plant anatomical structure.
Credit hours: 3
Prerequisites: 220 BIO
Objectives of the course :

The course aims to enable students to:

Explanation of the basic concepts in plant anatomy and its importance.
Anatomical description of plant organs (root, stem, leaves) in monocots and dicots.
Distinguishing between different types of plant tissues in terms of structure and function.
Comparison between primary and permanent tissues, as well as between monocots and dicots.
Secondary thickening analysis in root and stem.
Employing scientific sources and modern technologies in the study of botanical subjects.

Course outputs :

At the end of the course, the student will be able to:

I: Knowledge and understanding:

The student will learn about the concept of plant anatomy and its objectives using electronic resources and presentations.
To describe the anatomical structure of the root and stem (monocots and dicots) and their secondary thickening, as well as the structure of roots, stems, and leaves.

Second: Skills:
To compare primary tissues and permanent tissues in plants according to their structural and functional characteristics.
To distinguish between the anatomical structure of the root and stem in monocots and dicots with secondary thickening.
To explain the structures of plant tissues using diagrams and microscopic observations.
To examine the fundamental tissues (parenchyma, collenchyma, sclerenchyma, and secretory tissues) using laboratory methods.
To apply observation and analysis skills in interpreting the anatomical structure of the root, stem, and leaves.

Third: Values, Autonomy & Responsibility:
To adhere to scientific accuracy and laboratory ethics when analyzing plant anatomical structures.

Additional information:

This course contributes to preparing students for the job market by developing skills in microscopic analysis and structural diagnosis of plant tissues, which are essential skills in the fields of agriculture, plant production, plant protection, and biotechnology. The course also supports students' ability to interpret the impact of environmental factors on plant growth, qualifying them to work in the fields of environmental sustainability and plant resource management.

The course also promotes the use of modern technologies and laboratory tools, preparing graduates for work in research laboratories, agricultural centers, and environmental agencies. Additionally, it develops scientific research and teamwork skills, which are in demand in both academic and applied sectors.
