Integrated drug therapy: Infectious diseases

Course Description: This course aims to integrate the pathophysiological abnormalities of infectious diseases with concepts of drug action and therapy. Pharmacological therapy will be reviewed with a focus on pathophysiology, pharmacology, pharmaceutics, and medicinal chemistry. Emphasis will also be placed on drug selection, dosage regimen design, and therapeutic drug concentration monitoring to assess achievement of therapeutic efficacy and avoidance of side effects.

Objectives of the course :

1. Describe the pathophysiological processes of infectious diseases. 2. Explain the pharmacology of drugs used in the treatment of infectious diseases. 3. Illustrate the structure-activity relationships of drugs used in the treatment of infectious diseases. 4. Describe the dosage forms of drugs used in the treatment of infectious diseases. 5. Provide the therapeutic knowledge required for the management of patients with infectious diseases, identifying recommended antibiotic stewardship program strategies. 6. Describe appropriate pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic therapies. 7. Discuss the rationale and reasonable, practical solutions for drug-related problems. 8. Describe the desired outcomes of drug therapy. 9. Develop a plan for monitoring drug efficacy, adverse effects, adherence, and drug interactions for the treatment of patients.
