Course Description: The Pharmacognosy course aims to provide students with the necessary knowledge and understanding of medicinal plants and natural chemical product classes, encouraging their ongoing and extensive interest in medicinal plants, with a focus on those available in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The course also aims to introduce students to different types of complementary and alternative medicine, as well as dietary supplements and nutraceuticals.

Prerequisites: 111 PHC
Objectives of the course :

Understand the importance of natural products, especially medicinal plants, as a source of drugs.
• Knowing basic information about natural products as a class of drugs.
Understand methods of extraction and identification of different types and classes of natural products.
Understanding the physical and chemical properties, pharmacological activity, toxicity, and uses of natural products.
• Understanding the concept of nutraceuticals and the components of dietary supplements.

Course outputs :

Identifying plants and other living organisms that are natural sources of medicines and understanding their therapeutic importance.
• Identification of active ingredients in leaves, fruits, seeds, flowers, and bark, their pharmacological effects, and contraindications.
• Explanation of the potential use of traditional medicines and herbal combinations based on scientific and clinical evidence.
• Summarizes methods for exploring the benefits of new natural sources for drugs and their therapeutic importance.
• Conduct chemical tests to identify botanical ingredients or products of botanical origin.
