Self-care and over-the-counter treatments

Course Description: This course will introduce students to over-the-counter (OTC) medications and other self-treatments used to manage a variety of common minor ailments. The underlying causes, signs, symptoms, appropriate OTC medications, and exclusion criteria for self-care will be taught for each condition discussed. Students will also learn the basic mechanism of action, uses, and potential side effects of each medication presented. This course will enhance students' understanding of how to safely and effectively use OTC medications and self-care products.

Objectives of the course :

Course Objectives: This course aims to: Provide students with knowledge related to over-the-counter (OTC) drugs, including legal requirements, drug classification, storage conditions, and the pharmacist's role in providing health information and supervising self-care. Provide foundational knowledge of selected minor health ailments, including their causes, risk factors, signs and symptoms, and how to choose appropriate self-treatment or refer the patient to another healthcare provider. Provide a knowledge base of OTC drugs, including their biological mechanisms of action, dosages, side effects, and contraindications in the treatment of selected minor health ailments affecting the gastrointestinal tract, eyes, ears, skin, and upper respiratory system in different patient populations. Principles of complementary and integrative medicine will also be presented.

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
Identify the regulations and laws governing non-prescription drugs.
Recalling the signs, symptoms, risk factors, pathophysiology, complications, and referral criteria for minor ailments such as: heartburn, indigestion, intestinal gas, diarrhea, constipation, hemorrhoids, oral health problems, cough, common cold, hay fever, common eye disorders, ear problems, acne, dandruff, psoriasis, and parasitic skin diseases.
Description of the pharmacological information for over-the-counter products, some alternative medicines, and non-pharmacological methods for self-treatment of minor health ailments, such as: heartburn, indigestion, intestinal gas, diarrhea, constipation, hemorrhoids, oral health problems, cough, common cold, hay fever, common eye disorders, ear problems, acne, dandruff, psoriasis, and parasitic skin diseases.
Gathering, assessing, and interpreting patient information to determine if the condition requires no intervention, self-care with over-the-counter products, or medical referral.
Design, implement, monitor, evaluate, and modify a patient's healthcare plan to ensure safe, effective, and cost-efficient self-care.
Communicate with patients and others in a highly sensitive and effective manner, including individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds.
Maintaining professional competence in patient care through commitment to self-directed, lifelong learning.
Provide patient-centered healthcare in a legal, ethical, and respectful manner in all interactions.
