Organic chemistry

Course Description: This course covers the fundamentals of organic chemistry, including: First: Atomic structure, subatomic particles, electronic configuration and its representation, atomic orbitals, hybridization and its role in determining the shape and structure of organic molecules, chemical bonds, electronegativity, inductive effect, resonance effect, mesomeric effect, hyperconjugation, polarity and its origin, reactive intermediates, and the meaning of arrows in chemistry. Second: Isomers (structural: chain isomerism, positional isomerism, functional group isomerism, tautomerism, or metamerism, ring-chain isomerism; and stereoisomers: conformational isomerism, optical isomerism, chirality, and achirality). The course will also explain the importance of stereochemistry in drug action. Third: The International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) nomenclature system, reactions and properties of hydrocarbons (alkanes, alkenes, alkynes), organic compounds containing functional groups, alkyl halides, alcohols, ethers, and epoxides.
Credits: 2
Objectives of the course :

• Enable the student to know the structure of the atom, subatomic particles, atomic mass, and atomic number.
• Enable students to understand and know valence and hybridization.
• Enable students to distinguish and identify organic compounds based on different functional groups and their chemical properties.

Course outputs :

Distinguish hybridization, geometry, and three-dimensional structure of organic molecules and functional groups.
Writing the chemical reactions and transformations of functional groups.
