Introduction to Pharmacy

Course Description: This course is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the pharmacy profession and its various dimensions. The course covers an introduction to pharmaceutical bodies and organizations, the development of skills to identify diverse pharmaceutical dosage forms, understanding and interpreting prescriptions, and recognizing reliable sources of drug information.

This course aims to introduce students to:
Overview of the Pharmacy Profession and its Various Fields.
Principles of Drug Discovery and Development.
Methods of drug administration and their delivery systems into the body, and different pharmaceutical dosage forms.
Understanding and interpreting medical prescriptions and drug dispensing orders.
Quality Assurance Concepts in Pharmacy Practice.
Overview of Different Sources of Drug Information.

By the end of this course, students will be expected to be able to:
Clarification of the history and philosophy of the pharmacy profession, and identification of the different fields of pharmacy practice.
Principles of drug discovery and development, drug delivery systems, pharmaceutical dosage forms, and routes of drug administration.
Identifying the pharmacist's role in different work environments and understanding the fundamentals of reading and interpreting medical prescriptions.
Review of different pharmaceutical information sources, the role of the Saudi Food and Drug Authority, and the concept of care and quality in pharmaceutical practice.
