Yesterday, Wednesday, 7/1/1442 A.H., Ahmed Al-Muhaimid was awarded the Australian Medal of Valor issued by the Governor General of Australia, making him the only non-Australian among the 29 people who received this medal, for saving a fifty-year-old man from drowning in the Yarra River in Melbourne.
He obtained his master's degree from Monash University in Melbourne, Australia, after the university sent him in 2016 to begin the journey of studying English and the master's degree, which was crowned with success and distinction, during which he left a wonderful image of the Saudi people in the minds of the Australian people after the story of his rescue of an Australian citizen was published and circulated in all media outlets there.
About the incident that took place in Melbourne on Sunday night, 4/5/1439 AH, "Almuhaimeed" said: He was accompanied by a number of his fellow accounting students on the bank of the Yara River at 9:00 pm when they heard a voice coming from the river of a man asking for help in a voice full of panic, fear and hope, so everyone rushed to help him, and he indicated that there was a drowning person in the river.
Almuhaimeed describes these difficult moments by saying: When I reached the drowning man, I found him unconscious and his weight was about 120 kilos, so I started pushing him towards the shore against the water current for a distance of about forty meters between pushing the drowning man and resisting the current until I reached the river harbor, and after I reached him, I asked the crowd to grab him and lift him to dry land, then I went up after him and fell from fatigue and exhaustion.
He explained that he stayed in the hospital for one day after this incident because during the rescue operation he had to drink a small amount of river water that is not suitable for drinking, which caused some stomach pains and necessitated checking on his health condition, pointing out that the news of this incident was widely reported locally and abroad and many media channels reported this act, which they described as heroic, stressing that what he did represents the morals and principles of Saudi society based on the principles of our Islamic religion that urges us to help others and help them.
Al-Muhaimeed considered that obtaining this medal was made possible by the grace of God Almighty, and after the trust placed in him by the Kingdom and the continuous support of the government of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz and His Highness the Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman - may God protect them - as well as the President of the University, Prof. Abdulrahman Al-Dawood, and all university employees who played a great role in obtaining his master's degree in accounting from Monash University in Melbourne, Australia, in the city of Melbourne.
